Casting With Ceri Jones : Ep. 95 Colliford & Wimbleball

This weeks podcast I head down to Devon and Cornwall and fish both Colliford & Wimbleball on probably the hottest days in nearly a hundred years. Fishing was tough but good to see plenty of fry feeders already active on Wimbleball and had some fantastic fishing at Colliford for wild browns and to my surprise wild common carp.

This weeks episode I chat with Ted Wherry. He has such a passion for wild browns he left his home in the UK and moved over to the West of Ireland near the shores of Lough Corrib. He fishes most days throughout the season and loves fishing dries, whether its buzzer time, olives, mayfly or sedges. He has had great success over the years catching fish between 4 to 7lb most seasons. He also talks of his timber boat which is his pride and joy.

This weeks Podcast episode I chat with Waterford angler Jason O Riordan. Early season he can be seen fishing his local reservoir Knockaderry for both browns and rainbows, but as soon as the weather warms up he turns to the salt to fish for Bass and Mullet. It is plain to see he has a passion for Bass and fishes the eastuary near his home and along the Copper Coast. He also talks of the occasional trip up to Corrib and the enjoyment he gets fishing with good friends.

He tells of his story of his recent catch, a magnificent big brown while fishing the International on the River Don in Scotland. This weeks episode join me as I fish and target resident rainbows at Llyn Fawr. For the first time in a few seasons the steep bank has been inaccessible due to being overgrown and bankside willows. Now with lower water levels I head over to see if I can tempt the fish which havent had a fly cast to them for some time.

This week I episode I focus on sea trout, for July has traditionally been the time when sea trout fishing kicks in. I chat with Alun Rees who has been a guest on my podcast on two previous episodes. He talks of how he feels sea trout fishing needs an update as very little has changed over the years regarding flies and methods. He talks of his ideas and plans for this season and how he is keen to try new ideas and encourages anglers to think out of the box.

This week I chat with English International Craig Barr, at his home water at Rutland Water. He has many achievements including seven international caps to his name and is England Captain this year at Llyn Trawsfynnydd. He has also been England Manager and runs a successful fly business, Flash Attack. I catch up with him on the lodge veranda looking over the lake. He talks about flies, areas and the pin fry feeders which are happening now.

This week I talk of my recent success fishing for ferox on Lough Corrib. I have had great success over the years and spent hundreds of hours catching ferox to over 20lb including the record 25lb 2oz. This week I chat with Gareth Lewis, secretary of Gwent Angling Society. He has the River Usk running through his veins and has a real passion for wild browns. He is known to many for his love of tying and fishing micro flies, notably dries up to size 24 which he has great success on. Even tho he is no longer tying commercially, he still enjoys taking part in angling shows around the country. He also tells us how it all started for him while fishing as a small boy on the upper reaches of the Taff near his home in Merthyr.

This week I had an amazing few days on the Corrib at Portacarron Bay. I talk of my experience, the conditions, tactics and flies used. I caught all my fish on a fly given to me by professional tyer Jimmy Tyrrell, a deadly detached body mayfly. All fish were from 2.5lb to just under 6lb. Enjoy!

His main water is Lough Sheelin where he has had great success this year already, with many fish around the 5lb and all fish coming to his preferred method of fishing the buzzer. He also talks of his love for Lough Erne and Corrib plus he has some hilarious stories to tell.
